P1 Picnic

P1 Picnic

ACSP and the PSG welcomed the new Primary 1 boys and their parents into the ACS family with a fun picnic under the shade of the hall!

The picnic saw the parents from each class sitting together and getting to know each other, while listening to the words of wisdom from the Pastor as he shared parenting tips! Once the boys joined their parents, they opened up the picnic baskets and shared food, laughter and experiences!

The PSG helped each class to play the ACS Drill where the boys and parents first took turns to form the A-C-S letters them did ten together! It was wonderful watching the boys and their parents strategise over how the letters should be formed!

The picnic ended with a vibrant dance performance of the Shark Dance with children performing for their parents, then vice versa and a grand finale with everyone participating!

We hope the P1 picnic has left wonderful memories with both parents and boys, and they will build upon these bonds for their whole ACS journey. As the boys headed back to class, the parents spent some time at the PSG merchandise booth, making sure they have our awesome crest on many of their boys’ belongings!

P6 Graduation Party

P6 Graduation Party

After the P6 Graduation ceremony on 12 November 2019, the P6 boys excitedly changed into their video game – themed costumes, and rushed into the auditorium to enjoy a party that a group of parent volunteers had planned for them. Preparations had begun the day before, with some parents packing goodie bags while others were decorating the auditorium.

On the day of the party, the boys were thrilled when they saw an auditorium that had been bedecked with video game themed balloons and decorations. While feasting on delicious waffles, ice cream, pop corn, candy floss, and a full buffet, they also enjoyed a Fortnite nerf gun challenge, an Angry Bird challenge, as well as learn some new soccer skills from an external soccer coach.

A video game themed table quiz was immensely enjoyed by the boys. The photo booth was also tremendously popular amongst the parents, teachers and boys, who posed happily with the various props, creating precious photo memories. The grand finale was a spirited Fortnite inspired “dance off “ on stage. The auditorium roared with excitement as the boys enthusiastically cheered their classmates on, all hoping to win the prize for the best dance.

We thank the planning committee comprising 22 parent volunteers who put in much effort to make this celebration wonderful for our graduating boys!

2019 P1 Concert

Our littlest boys, the P1s put up a concert for the elders from Yong-En Care Centre, St. Luke’s Elder Home, Pertapis Senior Citizens Fellowship and Sree Narayana Mission Home. Each class prepared a song and dance item, some in English and others in Mandarin. The Malay-language and Tamil-language boys also put up performances in those languages!

As the busses carrying our visitors reached ACS, the elders were delighted to see the little boys lined up to welcome them and lead them up to the Auditorium. As the little ones performed on stage, the elders clapped and bopped their heads along to the music as the volunteer Teacher Aides offered them coffee and tea. You could see that our guests were enjoying themselves watching the cute dances! Some classes even came off the stage and interacted with the guests as part of their routine!

After the performances, the TAs and boys served lunch to the elders, and the boys presented the elders with little handmade cards as tokens of appreciation for making time to come to school! Such acts of service do a lot to teach our boys to always have a willing heart to serve and develop their iHopeful values.

It was a lovely afternoon for our visitors and we hope to see them again next year!

Toy Buffet 2019

Toy Buffet 2019

Once the year-end assessments ended, our Parent Volunteers kicked back into high gear and as the school called for donations of toys, new and old, they helped to sort and wrap all these as gifts for the children at Toy Buffet 2019, run by Food From the Heart. An annual event, it treats about 3,000 underprivileged children to toys, games and yummy food!

After 3 days of wrapping and sorting, many boys and volunteers turned up bright and early at Nanyang Polytechnic to decorate our booth to the theme of Superheroes! Our other superheroes reported to school first, to help carry, and load all the toys onto the bus to be transported to NYP.

Over the course of the day, approximately 3,000 children were given 10,000 toys by various organisations, of which at least 800 were from us! The smiles the kids gave us and their gleaming eyes when they saw their favourite toys on display were so heart-warming!

Many of our boys commented that the kids they met has such big hearts, choosing toys for their siblings instead of themselves, the boys said they wished they could learn to love more and give more too!

We hope all our boys have learnt how much joy can come from giving and sharing, and are looking forward to next year and more opportunities to share!

Toys Buffet VIA Activity

RWP/MBP Grad Party 2019

I volunteer in many different areas in school, as many parent volunteers do, but one of my favourite activities remains the Reading Warriors Programme (RWP).

RWP is one of ACS Primary’s signature literacy support programmes, meeting the reading needs of Primary One and Two boys. It is helmed by a dedicated group of teachers from the English department and supported by a team of about 50 parent volunteers. Each of whom have to undergo specialised training by our very own in-house teachers before they can coach the boys. The boys come in for 5-10 minutes, every school day, during their recess time, to learn phonics and to read sight words or short stories as they progress.

It is a testament to the effectiveness of the programme, having the boys themselves recognise the benefits of being part of the programme and voluntarily running to the learning centre where the sessions are held each day! At the end of the two-year programme, that starts with basic phonics and ends with reading, comprehension and summary skills, the boys receive their graduation certificates and badges during a mini-graduation ceremony. Many of the graduates remember RWP fondly and often pop by to visit the teachers and coaches after they move on to the upper primary levels.

This year’s graduation party was held on 7th October with a cleverly-coined theme of Star Wars to celebrate our little “star readers”. One of our parent volunteers gamely dressed up as Darth Vader and gave the boys such a treat! The teachers had also prepared a light meal and fun-filled goodie bags for the boys. Our principal, Dr Irene Ng also invited a couple of boys to give an impromptu sharing of what they felt about the programme and both eloquently remarked how grateful they were to their coaches. Seeing the boys all grown up and graduating from the programme gave us parent volunteers such a sense of pride and fulfilment.

The school recently welcomed some trainee teachers visiting from other schools, to observe and learn how the programme is implemented and run. The visiting teachers commented that ACS Primary is very blessed to have such a sizeable group of parent volunteers, who believe in the cause and turn up faithfully to help the boys. We certainly couldn’t agree more!
